Chapter 11

“Theresa,” Stephanie said, walking back into the office. It saddened her to see Theresa in such a depressed state. Theresa was a strong woman whose independence, confidence, and strength usually shone brightly. When she saw Theresa with her head in her hands, Stephanie decided to give her time to get herself together. “Theresa, security is bringing Danielle up now. They just finished processing her. I’m going to give her a quick tour of the floor while you get yourself together. It shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes. Get yourself together while I’m gone.”

Theresa didn’t raise her head fully, but she did nod her head in acknowledgment. “Thanks, Stephanie.”

As soon as Stephanie shut the office door, Mikey opened it and strolled into his mother’s office as if nothing had ever happened. He sat down in the chair across from her like a little man.

Theresa quietly watched him enter and wondered what was going to come out of his mouth. Did he believe what Ryan had shouted out in an effort to gain their son’s loyalty? Did he hate her? Did he think that she didn’t love him? Theresa realized that this was one of the scariest moments of her life.

“Mom,” he began before looking her in the eye. “I’m sorry.”

“No, baby,” Theresa quickly interjected. “I’m sorry. I should have never let your father get me so upset.” Tears began to fall from her eyes. She wanted to ask him what he had heard, but was afraid to bring up the subject.

“I know that you love me, Mom. And I don’t believe what he said.” Mikey went around the desk and gave his mother a hug.

Theresa hugged him back. “Thank you, baby. You don’t know how worried I was that you might take what he said the wrong way. Mikey, I love you more than anything in this world.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have to be around him if you don’t want to. I’ll do everything in my power to fight him for custody.”

Mikey looked at his mother. He knew that this was the moment that his uncle was talking about. And he should tell her that he felt he should get to know his father, but when he looked in her eyes and saw how hurt she was, he couldn’t. He didn’t want to upset her any further.

Instead, he changed the subject. “Mom, don’t you have class tonight?”

“Yes, but I wasn’t going to go. I wanted to stay and spend some time with you. I already told your Uncle Michael that you wouldn’t be coming with him tonight.”

“I asked Uncle Thorne if I could come to his house. Did you know that Uncle Michael would start acting funny around Ms. Tamia now that she is pregnant?”

Mikey asked it so innocently that Theresa had to smile. “Well, that is what some men do when they are about to become a father.”

“It’s just weird. She can’t hurt herself just by walking from the living room to the kitchen, but he’s trying to hold her hand every time she moves and stuff.
